JERA teams up with Dell, RHAELM on AI infrastructure development in Japan
DELL•JERA, Dell Technologies and RHAELM signed an agreement to develop a standardised framework for AI infrastructure in Japan, starting with a planned $15 billion data centre in Chiba. The 400-megawatt facility aims to begin phased operations in 2028 and reach full capacity in 2029.
1. Framework and first project
Japan's biggest power generator JERA will partner with Dell Technologies and UK-based AI infrastructure developer RHAELM to develop a standardised framework for building AI infrastructure at national scale. The companies plan to apply the model first to a $15 billion hyperscale data centre in Chiba.
2. Roles and timeline
JERA will make land available next to its Chiba power station and supply 400 megawatts of power capacity under a 15- to 25-year agreement. RHAELM will develop, construct, operate and finance the data centre, while Dell will provide standardised, rack-scale AI infrastructure. The companies aim to begin phased operations in 2028 and reach full 400 MW capacity in 2029.
3. Investment partner
Apollo Global Management plans to serve as a strategic investment and financial partner for RHAELM on the Chiba project. The companies said they aim to explore applying the model in other global markets.
