North Korea warns of stronger action toward South Korea over mine blast accusations
EWY•North Korea rejected South Korea’s accusation that it planted the mine that seriously wounded two South Korean soldiers on September 21, calling the findings a “grave provocation.” It threatened “immediate and powerful counteraction” if South Korean forces crossed the border.
1. North Korea rejects accusation
North Korea’s Foreign Ministry dismissed South Korea’s investigation into the September 21 blast as a “premeditated farce” and said the findings violated its sovereignty. South Korea said a joint inquiry with the United Nations Command and scientific analysis showed a North Korean anti-personnel mine seriously wounded two of its soldiers.
2. Threats and mine removal
The ministry warned that any South Korean violation of North Korean territory would prompt “immediate and powerful counteraction.” South Korea’s military demanded an apology and the removal of mines it said were laid in violation of the Korean War armistice, while starting its own mine-removal operations. Seoul said North Korea deployed up to 7,000 workers this year to install mines and fences as part of border fortification work begun in 2024.
