UK to Block Under-16 Access to YouTube, Impose Curfews and AI Limits
GOOG•UK government will prohibit under-16 users from accessing YouTube and disable livestreaming, overnight curfews, infinite-scroll, and AI chatbot services for minors, with enforcement guidelines due in July. These restrictions could reduce engagement on Alphabet’s video platform and pressure ad revenue as regulatory scrutiny intensifies.
1. UK Government Proposal
Prime Minister Keir Starmer unveiled plans to ban users under 16 from platforms including YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat. The proposal also targets features such as livestreaming, stranger messaging, infinite scrolling and AI-based services, with messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal exempt and detailed enforcement rules expected in July.
2. Implications for Alphabet and YouTube
The measures pose a direct threat to user engagement metrics on YouTube, where under-16s represent a significant viewership segment. Reduced watch time and interaction could dent advertising revenue and set a precedent for similar restrictions in other markets, increasing compliance costs and broader regulatory challenges for Alphabet.
