UPS’s 5.2 million-square-foot Worldport hub in Louisville has overtaken FedEx’s Memphis SuperHub as the world’s largest express air cargo facility. The expansion boosts sorting capacity to 285,000 packages per hour across 111 loading docks, enhancing overnight delivery reach.

1. Worldport Expansion Completed

UPS recently finished a major expansion of its Worldport facility in Louisville, growing the hub to 5.2 million square feet. The project added new conveyor lines, automated sorting modules and expanded dock space to support higher package volumes.

2. Capacity and Throughput

Post-expansion, Worldport can sort up to 285,000 packages per hour, a 20% increase over its prior capacity. The hub now features 111 loading docks and upgraded tracking systems to streamline flow during peak periods.

3. Competitive Edge Over FedEx

With this upgrade, UPS surpasses FedEx’s Memphis SuperHub in both square footage and throughput, reinforcing its lead in overnight express delivery. The move could shift air cargo market share as shippers seek faster transit options.

4. Impact on Network Efficiency

Higher capacity at Worldport is expected to lower per‐package handling costs and reduce delays in UPS’s global network. Enhanced sorting speed may support revenue growth in e-commerce and international freight segments.
